shiyal bet

Shiyal Bet is named after the surname of people living on it, ‘Shiyal’. It is situated near Pipavav Port in Arabian sea and it is the only island in india without the provision of electricity. Though it is in middle of sea, wells here give fresh sweet water to drink (This phenomenon is termed as Perched Aquifer in Geotechnical Engineering). It has a population of 8000 mostly of fisherman. The famous Chelaiya’s birth place is also supposed to be Shiyal Bet.

Historically it is known as the first place Portuguese captured, after attack on 7 February, 1531. Their leader Nuno da Cunha captured the Shiyal bet with his fleet. To Know more about Shiyal Bet, Click here to read an article in Gujarati. Photo By Jignesh Adhyaru.
